The more observant of you may have noticed that January 2008 never actually existed. At least, not according to our definitive collection of recorded history anyway. Yes, things have been incredibly quiet on this online home of mine, but the real world couldn’t be more different. Things are in fact much, much noisier than ever before.

It’s generally accepted that anyone who owns a Mac must, by definition, also own an iPod. If the halo-effect for the iPod is also accepted then it’s also possible that the iPod owner started with a PC and then switched to a Mac. Either way if you have a Mac then you must also have an iPod because if you don’t then you can’t be a real Mac person. Or something like that. Regardless I’ve gone through over 3-years of PowerBook ownership without owning an MP3 player of any variety (my wife has a 1GB iPod Shuffle but that doesn’t count) but a couple of weeks ago following the “It’s Showtime” announcement I caved and bought the new 80GB iPod, much to the annoyance of my accountant (read: my wife).

Recently I’ve been buried with review copies of horror related titles, and it’s forced a number of great games to be pushed further down the ‘to be played’ pile than I’d like. Shadow of the Colossus is buried. Call of Cthuhlu. Serious Sam 2. Quake 4. All buried as I slog on with Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil and Resident Evil 4 on PS2. Not that either of those are bad games, in the latter case far from it infact, but I don’t like having my hand forced. It’s hard to sit down and enjoy any time I spare on Call of Cthuhlu because someone else is reviewing it for the horror channel and I still have two games I’m working on reviewing. Still, for the most part I’ve been quite responsible. I’ll have both those games finished and reviewed probably by the end of the week, where upon I’ll run head first into Mario Kart DS… also the X-Box 360 launch looms big and large.
So really, it takes a great game to distract me from my work efforts. Two nights ago I was dedicatedly playing Land of the Dead when I’d have much rather have been playing, well anything else on my ‘to be played’ list. I made a conscious effort to lend Shadow of the Colossus to my brother in law so it wouldn’t distract me. Call of Cthuhlu is the kind of game you have to give at least a couple of hours to at a time, so while I’ve had a couple of play sessions it’s not been that difficult to stop being distracted by it.
Of course, I really I should have known better than running out on Friday and buying Guitar Hero.

The Web and Internet in general seems to be populated by all sorts of services, some more useful than others. While this might be somewhat banal, I’m actually a really big fan of Amazon not because they are generally a cheap place to buy books and DVDs, but because of the value-added features that helps me to discover new authors, artists, etc. that I’ll like. Using the “customer’s who bought this item also bought” and “average customer review” features (ignoring the rather pants idea of allowing idiot gamers to review games and consoles not even released yet) has enabled me over recent years to find some great products because I have been able to tap into like-minded people’s preferences. However, yesterday I was made aware of a new service that I really like much more.

I will admit this right away. I’m not a lawyer, judge, or legal expert of any kind. If I get anything wrong here feel free to let me know if you’re more knowledgeable than me for legal matters. I’m going to take Ben Franklin’s advice and doubt my own infallibility and say that while I was hoping Grokster would win, the US Supreme Court issued a good bit of case law in MGM v Grokster. My only qualification for making commentary is as an interested bystander in such things and as a amateur historian. Everyone feared that they would overturn the protections granted to the consumer in the Betamax Case and those are safe.
