Vermy Reviews IE7

By Vermouth , 31st July 10:22 am

I recently had the chance to get some serious hands on time with the latest version of Internet Explorer, the long awaited big update which was supposed to steal Firefox’s thunder. Well this is clearly the best version of IE yet and way more functional than IE6 but it still has some serious work to do compared with Firefox. I’m not sure they’ll be able to catch up in terms of smoothing out the rough edges but if they do this will make things from a functionality standpoint a dead heat in my book. That said I’m not much of a securities expert but most of the people I’ve talked to who purported to know about security tell me that the Mozilla Foundation is light years ahead of Redmond in terms of fixing problems in a hurry and not having problems develop. So, does IE 7 deliver the goods? The answer is definitely maybe.

Google for Stalkers

By Holliday , 23rd July 11:20 am

Well it was bound to happen. I guess. Now there is a combination of the best of the internet with one of the worst (in my opinion). Hot or Not meets Google in a zip code sprawling picture-fest. Using the brilliant Google Maps’ code someone has rigged markers to appear on each zip code with Hot or Not members in it. You can then cycle through their pictures and click them to get to their Hot or Not website profile.

To me, Hot or Not is one of those internet wastelands like 50% of Deviant Art and 100% of sites like “Rate my Rack.com”. On top of my general distaste for Hot or Not there is a bit of a creepy side to the whole project. The site is not part of Google or Hot or Not. It is something made by Frozen Bear Industries. If one makes a profile on Hot or Not are they informed that their face will pop up on another site, hovering right over where they live? Not exactly. But for those who actually read the Terms and Conditions (read: nobody) there is this:

Accordingly, by submitting your photograph and/or any personal information, you thereby waive any privacy expectations you have with respect to our use of your likeness or personal information provided to us.

Goody goody. I may just read terms more often.

Hot Coffee = Hot Water = Muppets

By Kelmon , 21st July 10:40 pm

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas GirlWell, we might as well address this subject. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA:SA) has now been handed an “Adults Only” label by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) following the publication of the Hot Coffee modification that allows player to play a sex-based minigame and pressure from the US Democrat party. While it can be debated as to whether the inclusion of such a minigame should constitute a label that has resulted in it being pulled from the shelves of major retailer, I’d like to focus on the following quote from Rodney Walker, spokesman of Rockstar Games, that was published by The New York Times:

“An artist makes a painting, then doesn’t like the first version and paints over the canvas with a new painting, right? That’s what happened here. Hackers on the Internet made a program that scratches the canvas to reveal an earlier draft of the game.”

What a moron.

The Emoticon

By Cyrris , 5:18 pm

The other day I sent a text message to a couple of friends. One being very familiar with the internet - a regular MSN user, and another who frankly is a complete computer illiterate. It wasn’t until I’d finished sending the message to both of them that I realised that I had included a :p emoticon, and I wondered if my second friend would have any idea what it was. It got me thinking about how much I take emoticons for granted, and how often I now use them - I never used to, but nowadays anything I type (be it on a keyboard or a keypad) ends up with at least one in there somewhere.

Steamrolling SiN

By Cyrris , 6th July 3:18 pm

I never played SiN, and as such, I have no real interest in it’s soon-to-be released sequel, but what has sparked my interest is the way that it’s developers, Ritual Entertainment, have decided to launch the game. SiN 2 is based on Half-Life 2’s Source engine, and so while it doesn’t come as any surprise that this means they’re now good friends with Valve, I was surprised to read that they plan on using Steam to deliver the game to the masses. I was even more surprised to read how they plan to go about it.

According to this Eurogamer article, SiN 2 is to be released periodically - one “chapter” of the game being released every few months, each chapter to be paid for separately. Now, while I am all for Steam being used by other developers, I find this method of gradual release quite odd, especially when installments are paid for separately.
