It’s generally accepted that anyone who owns a Mac must, by definition, also own an iPod. If the halo-effect for the iPod is also accepted then it’s also possible that the iPod owner started with a PC and then switched to a Mac. Either way if you have a Mac then you must also have an iPod because if you don’t then you can’t be a real Mac person. Or something like that. Regardless I’ve gone through over 3-years of PowerBook ownership without owning an MP3 player of any variety (my wife has a 1GB iPod Shuffle but that doesn’t count) but a couple of weeks ago following the “It’s Showtime” announcement I caved and bought the new 80GB iPod, much to the annoyance of my accountant (read: my wife).

I realised the other day as to just how quickly display technology is moving these days. Ever since I can remember (up until a year or so ago) the main television at my house has been an old 68cm CRT - by now it would easily be 20+ years old. It took until a couple of years ago for it to finally start dying with some image jittering, which is when we finally made the move to Plasma. Until Plasma prices fell and LCD popularity went through the roof over the past few years, people have pretty much been relying on the same TV technology for decades - the trusty old CRT. Now however it’s moving faster than I can really keep up with. It seems like just yesterday that Plasma and LCD was introduced - and neither technology has been perfected yet. Plasma still has it’s topography/gradient colour issues, and that risk of burn-in always lingers, worryingly, in the back of my head. LCD is only just starting to get models with respectable contrast and response times, and the price isn’t quite yet reasonable for large panels. Of course, the manufacturers claim that these problems will all go away with future manufacturing perfections and tweaks, but already, there are new technologies ready to supersede them altogether.

Television about technology is an atrocious, unsalvagable heap of dung. The two fields are just not meant to be married - as sensible as the pairing would seem. If there can be a network for golf or cooking surely there can be a network devoted to the world of gaming and technology? Well the sad answer is no - what television management want and what tech enthusiasts want are completely incompatible. Fortunately for me and all us other nerds out there, just as one medium is proving unsatisfactory a new medium is on the way.

In the time when MTV still aired music videos, you may have seen a video by a rapper called Lucas. It was a strange music video done in one take, by the master of the single take video, Michel Gondrey (certainly not a one trick pony either as he has countless great videos that aren’t single take, he’s just indisputably better than anyone else when it comes to one shot videos). The idea was simple and strong. Tell a story with multiple locations but all done in one studio.
Numerous in tricks with projectors and mirrors and such were used to achieve the effect, and it’s a very memorable video.
However, it wasn’t something that was going to happen first time. One mistake at any point in the video meant they had to start over. All in all it took them seventeen takes to get it right, and the end result was definitely worth the effort.
This though is an article about Lucasarts… EA… movie tie ins and more.

I’m not going to ask how many of you are Futurama fans. I’m sure almost all of you are. It’s past my bed time right now, but a quick squiz online before I hit the sack has turned out to be quite worthwhile. It appears, ladies and gents, that Futurama is indeed coming back, because Billy said so. Who is Billy? Why, he’s the voice of half the characters on the show. Now, if this was made known on Thursday and I have only heard about it now, that does make me a bit suspicious, but perhaps the media has just been cautious. Or I’ve been deaf. Rumours have indeed been making the rounds over the past few weeks and all of the above information seems legit - unless the voice actor himself has been had, or is lying. Unlikely. In any case, I’m buying it.
There is of course a catch - according to Mr West’s forum post, it’s not coming back to our TV sets at a regular time week. Instead, they are releasing feature-length movies on DVD, with Fox hoping to ride on the success of Futurama’s DVD sales since the show was axed. It makes sense, but I’m still very much sitting on the fence as to whether or not the new format will work out for me. I don’t recall any previous full-length movie doing too well if it was based off a series made up of short episodes. On the other hand, Futurama’s style of humour definately has a lot more lastability than Family Guy, not just with long term re-runs, but also on how many episodes I can see back-to-back in one go. I always felt that the 25 or so minutes of each episode could have been longer without dragging on.
Overall this is fantastic news. But should we be content with 4 feature length movies, or should we be after more? Damn, that does sound greedy.
