Girls in Gaming

By Unimaginative Pseudonym , 2nd June 4:12 am

Something I’ve been considering for a while, which has been further brought to my attention by Holliday’s post a while back - why are girls so badly represented in the gaming community?

I don’t mean “why are there so few girl gamers?” or “why are female characters in games so rare?”, but “Why are girls in the gaming community represented as sex symbols?” The same question applies to female gamers as well as female game characters (I don’t really think I need to mention Dead or Alive : Xtreme Volleyball here, but I will anyway…).

Do not pass Go

By Unimaginative Pseudonym , 11th January 7:03 am

While I don’t exactly have a state of the art gaming PC, I’m not too far behind either; I can run most new games (albeit with low detail in some cases). I’m telling you this so that you can truly appreciate the choice of game I’ve been enjoying recently; rather than playing around with Half-life 2’s physics, losing my social life to World of Warcraft or conquering Gaul in Rome : Total War I’ve been playing online Monopoly.

Gaming Skill Atrophy

By Unimaginative Pseudonym , 15th October 5:58 pm

While I’ve never been hugely skilled at First Person Shooters, I’ve always been pretty good. There’ve even been occasions where I was pretty damn godlike - getting a single frag in a game of UT when I had a ping of 2000 springs immediately to mind (No luck involved, of course), but they were more the exception than the rule. Basically - depending on the game of course - I’ve always been a pretty decent gamer.

As you’ve probably gathered from that example, I learnt my multiplayer skills in 56k hell, which always provides a handy excuse for extreme suckage (not that I ever needed one of course…); in all seriousness, though, I was pretty good. I could hold my own against the truly brilliant players, and won a few matches of CS in my day (no small feat when you’re playing against people who are more experienced than you and have a tenth of your ping)

All that glitters is not gold…

By Unimaginative Pseudonym , 30th August 8:08 am

Late last night (US time, that is), Half-Life fanboys were sent orgasmic by a post on the Half-Life 2 Fallout forum by Gabe Newell.

Simply - “We’re going gold on Monday…”

Predictably, rather a large number of people got rather excited about this.
Alas - this jubilation was to be short lived…
