Awful Gamer Branding

By Plagiarize , 27th June 1:54 am

DOMINATION!

True and funny story. Friday night, I sit down to play Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter Chapter 2 to try the new coop missions. I’m playing with my usual group of friends, and having a great time running around in a pistols only match in Old Town. We’re laughing and joking, until sometime into the second game, I realise that people don’t seem to hear me any more.

My Kitten, sat in my lap, had chewed through the headset cable.

I sent a few messages telling people what had happened, and everyone had a good laugh about it. One of them recommended that I pick up the Plantronics headset as my replacement, which is what I did… and I can say after testing it out Sunday evening, that it’s a great headset.

What isn’t so great, is the pitiful attempt to appeal to ‘gamers’ on the back of the packaging.

Lucas With the Lid Off

By Plagiarize , 18th June 3:48 am

In the time when MTV still aired music videos, you may have seen a video by a rapper called Lucas. It was a strange music video done in one take, by the master of the single take video, Michel Gondrey (certainly not a one trick pony either as he has countless great videos that aren’t single take, he’s just indisputably better than anyone else when it comes to one shot videos). The idea was simple and strong. Tell a story with multiple locations but all done in one studio.

Numerous in tricks with projectors and mirrors and such were used to achieve the effect, and it’s a very memorable video.

However, it wasn’t something that was going to happen first time. One mistake at any point in the video meant they had to start over. All in all it took them seventeen takes to get it right, and the end result was definitely worth the effort.

This though is an article about Lucasarts… EA… movie tie ins and more.

Smoking Guns and Secret Histories

By Plagiarize , 9th June 2:47 am

A ’smoking gun’ is an indisputable piece of evidence, named so because finding a smoking gun on a murder suspect would pretty much wrap up the case. If there’s any argument, it’s not a smoking gun.

That doesn’t invalidate the evidence, or make it inconclusive evidence, it just means that that evidence by itself doesn’t prove absolutely the charges being raised. In the argument between those that say video games cause violent behavior and those that say they don’t, some people have claimed to find the smoking gun proving an absolute link.

Let’s take a look at what things have been cited as smoking guns, and what the ideal smoking gun would be.

The Emergence of Episodes

By Plagiarize , 2nd June 1:00 am

Consider this two things, one, an informal review of Sin Episodes: Emergence, and two, a look at the ideas behind episodic gaming as today we get Half Life 2: Episode 1.

Skeptics could say that what we’re seeing is way to charge gamers more for the same content. At around $15 to $20 an episode, which gets you three to five hours of gameplay, to play the ‘full adventure’ is going to cost you $45 to $60. It’s not a major increase really, but one of the apparent benefits of episodic gaming is that you don’t pay for the parts of the game you haven’t reached, unless you want to.

Every game has games that they didn’t finish, whether because they didn’t like them, got bored, something better came along, whatever the reason, we’ve all been there. For a small price, I can get a chunk of game that I know I’m going to finish, and if I hate it I’ve only invested a small cost instead of a big one, though more on that way of thinking later.

Sony drop ball instead of bomb. Fanboys cry.

By Plagiarize , 9th May 3:57 pm

A rather lackluster press conference came to a shocking end, as first, Sony unveiled that the Dual Shock 3 has some of the functionality of the Wii controller (though not all) claiming this to be a major innovation, despite acknowledging that developers have only been aware of it for two weeks. It’s one thing to borrow an idea from a competitor, espescially when it’s a good idea, but to call it innovative and attempt to dodge the issue of where the inspiration came from, is more than a stupid move.

Then came the price point. $499 for a PS3 with a 20 gig hard drive. $599 for a PS3 with a 60 gig hard drive.

Talk about double ouch.
