Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard: A Spotty Release

By Kelmon , 6th November 8:39 am

About This Mac Leopard MBPThis is going to be the longest article that I’ve written for Aelon but since I’ve not written one for a while I have a fair bit to make up. Since I am sure that many people reading this will not want to wade their way through the complete article I’m going to make things easy on you by providing an up-front conclusion. However, before this I’m going to provide a bit of background about what this article is and what it isn’t, plus a bit about me and how this has been achieved. I hope that this information will put the article into context and also give an indication of whether you should trust me.

Leopard Delay - Hooray For Common Sense

By Kelmon , 13th April 6:07 pm

I’m really looking forwards to getting my hands on Apple’s next release of their OS X operating system, 10.5 Leopard. While the full details of what will be included in this release have not been made public, the current Sneak Peak shows that for the developer there will be some very useful tools that should enable you to deliver more interesting applications, faster and with fewer bugs (there’s a few toys for the end-user as well). This morning, however, MacWorld is reporting that Leopard will be delayed from its announced Spring release to October. Given how useful I expect this release to be, to me this announcement should be depressing news.

UPDATE: Apple now makes this official on their own website.

Hooray!

My First iPod - 80GB iPod With Video Review

By Kelmon , 2nd November 4:50 am

iPodIt’s generally accepted that anyone who owns a Mac must, by definition, also own an iPod. If the halo-effect for the iPod is also accepted then it’s also possible that the iPod owner started with a PC and then switched to a Mac. Either way if you have a Mac then you must also have an iPod because if you don’t then you can’t be a real Mac person. Or something like that. Regardless I’ve gone through over 3-years of PowerBook ownership without owning an MP3 player of any variety (my wife has a 1GB iPod Shuffle but that doesn’t count) but a couple of weeks ago following the “It’s Showtime” announcement I caved and bought the new 80GB iPod, much to the annoyance of my accountant (read: my wife).

Leopard Spotted in San Francisco

By Kelmon , 11th August 7:37 am

What a difference a few days makes. On Tuesday night I was about ready to take Apple to task following the highly anticipated keynote address of the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2006 that’s happening in San Francisco this week. There were a number of good reasons for this but waiting a bit longer has enabled me to both understand more about what was announced and also see the announcement for myself. At the end of things what we got on Monday morning (or night, depending on where you lay your hat) was mostly what we expected but without any real “blow your socks off” stuff. This article provides a summary of what happened and what interested or annoyed me.

Joining The Flock

By Kelmon , 21st June 10:10 pm

Flock Start UpThe Browser Wars were something that, for a few years, were consigned to the past. Microsoft came, beat the crap out of Netscape, and conquered the Internet. So, it was with some surprise that we discover that the Browser Wars are not only back again but are much more interesting. While Firefox has, for the most part, got most of the publicity these days, I thought that I’d contribute to things by posting a review of a new pretender, Flock. This review is based on the recently released beta (version 0.7) under Mac OS X but my review is equally applicable to the Windows version that I am running at work (less a couple of Mac-specific annoyances that I’ll come to a bit later).

Right off the bat I’ll say this. If you have any interest in publishing information on the Internet (blogging or posting pictures) then you have my highest recommendation to go and download this browser now. Seriously, stop reading this, go and download it, and then come back. Don’t worry, I’ll still be here when you’ve finished installing.
