MSN Search Beta

By Cereal Samurai , 15th August 12:31 am

After just plain forgetting to look at it this past week, I finally took a squiz at the new MSN Search, Microsoft’s great white-backgrounded hope against the likes of Google and Yahoo! and, I guess, any of those other less noted search engines. Though the organizational advantages Microsoft boast about it are hard to see at first, continued searching did bring me some rather interesting results.

I got a ripping recipe for Rock Cakes in, like, half a second.

Incorporating the standard “sleeker than you” Microsoft type of layout, and spitting out the results in no majorly different ways, though, leaves it a personal choice. Personally, I like the design and features MSN tends to bring to everything, in particular MSN Messenger. I know many, though, that do not. Whether these kind of “enhancements” will come into fruition - and whether anyone will care - is mostly up in the air. The fact is, Google won me over many years ago, converting me from a search-engine hopping loon to a dedicated user.

What it really comes down to is whether Microsoft will have an easily edited logo to sport funny in-jokes or references depending on what’s happening for that day, like Google often does. If not, then why even bother?

The Internet Fools Us Once More

By Cereal Samurai , 5th August 5:54 pm

I’m not surprised. I thought the initial whirlwind of news lacked that official ring to it - the sweet, sweet taste that distincts it from everyday rumors - but it was being confirmed “everywhere” so we all took a bite. But, they were wrong. Eric Bana is not, and will not be, playing James Bond in the next flick. Shocking, eh?

“Someone told me that yesterday,” he laughs. “That’s not something I’ve ever really contemplated — no, I wouldn’t be a Bond, no.”

Hate To Say I Told You So

By Cereal Samurai , 1st August 9:01 pm

After taking a sabbatical from “modern rock revival” in general as of late, with the unavoidable exception of The White Stripes and The Von Bondies finding their way into my stereo and CD player, the one week at the end of July that brought Sweden’s Sahara Hotnights and The Hives into my favourite music stores once more had me itching to give each a listen. After turning the radio dial back from the golden oldies’ station GOLD FM to the modern alternative of Triple J, I broke down and bought both albums without hearing the bulk of them previously - something I haven’t done since I got the internet.

The initial verdict, in case you’re wondering, was The Hives’ Tyrannosaurus Hives being good, and Sahara Hotnights’ Kiss & Tell being great. After after a couple of weeks doing the rounds, though, the final verdict is a bit of a switch. Where The Hives’ effort initially feels less a progression than a retread of previous sounds - or at best fulfilling expectations - the band is undeniably tighter than on previous outings.
