I’m not usually one to build up hype for no particular reason, but frankly I currently have nothing else to do aside from putting myself to bed, and that’s boring. So, without further ado, here is some blatant Aelon propaganda:

As you can see, I have chosen a new logo and I’m sticking with it. We also have a new colour scheme on the way, hopefully with enough hot colours to keep Kelmon’s eyes from freezing over. When I first started thinking about a new design a few months ago, I thought I had figured out what it was going to look like already. Needless to say everything has turned out completely different, but quite possibly far better. Except maybe for IE users.
While the basic theme is done, there is still lots left to do. I haven’t integrated it into the blog software yet, and I plan on making all sorts of minor additions which Aelon v8 doesn’t have - just small things that really give it that polished feel. Little javascript things here and there to play with, extra icons and graphics, and generally a more helpful interface. Then of course a revamped forum design to match it all. While I have every intention of meeting the new years deadline, I of course won’t be making promises. Cancer in the family + holiday season = unpredictability for sure. But hey, this redesign is 6 months overdue already. It’s definately about time.

You sort of know how i stand on this, i don’t really think the current look has something wrong with it such that it needs to be redesigned. But, if this looks nice I won’t mind either. My favorite sites have the least interesting looks to them (shacknews, slashdot, Digg etc.) To me the text is the end all be all of a website. I’d be happy to visit a site that were just a plain white with black text if the information on it were worth consuming.

“Except maybe for IE users.” - Nuts. Ah well, I suppose I could use my non-IE browser on this site. It is growing on me…

Thorny I think that non-IE browser of yours is infact IE but with a different user interface, so it’ll still be just as crap.
Currently the new design uses a fair bit of alpha transparency with PNG images, which IE can’t do because it sucks. I am still considering whether or not to do a separate stylehseet for IE users. It would be a fair bit of extra work, probably a lot more work than it would be for you to do what you know is right. But we’ll see.

To be honest, it’d make a nice change to see a web site that recommends that the user UPGRADES their browser from IE to a compatible browser. I know the world doesn’t work like that and that it’s very bad practice to make such requests of the reader, but I’m kinda sick of all the sites that tell me to do the same when I want to use Safari or other non-IE browsers.
We’ll see about the hot colours when we see the final look…

Well, the latest incarnation of Binary Bonsai is extremely IE-unfriendly. It has a yellow box to let you know IE won’t work with it, but IE displays the whole page so poorly that the box itself is virtually unreadable.
Of course, editing your CSS to make it display a “Don’t use IE” div is really just as much effort as making the site somewhat usable in IE anyway.
Aelon v9 will feature more prominent Firefox links for IE users, that’s for sure. But the site will still be usable, just not pretty.

I just hope it works on my PSP so I can still read Aelon from the cosy blankets of my bed.

Umm, hmm.
I’ll add it to my to-do list, we’ll see how it goes. I don’t exactly have one to test it out with.

Do I smell a reason for excessive consumer spending?

I like it alot. It’s an improvement over a logo that is already excellent. Bravo
