It shows the helmet being used in conjunction with a hood (as all Sith wear), and although it does look quite top heavy, it also looks a lot cooler. Perhaps that's how it was meant to be. Its just the limits of the time. The lightsaber fights in IV-VI are really pretty basic compared to the fancy choreography in I-II. The Darth helmet is such a classic. Perhaps it is because I saw the movies when I was much younger but darth vader still looks rather menacing to me.
