The Other E3

By Cyrris

Two E3’s are arriving in mid may this year. First and foremost (for me) is of course the Electronic Entertainment Expo which launches on May 18. It’s set to be pretty big, but the day after it starts is the launch day for the other E3 - that being Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.

Now, while the previous two were visual feasts, they weren’t all that hot at much else, and they have brought a lot of criticism with them. Watching the full trailer for Episode 3 though, it really looks like it could be a winner. I’m actually starting to get mildly excited, though I probably won’t be buying any merchandise. That said, I have also spoiled a few plot items for myself… I viewed a couple of screenshots that have been going around the web, and yesterday I flicked through some Episode 3 books when I was at the mall. I don’t recommend you do the same if you wish to keep yourself from spoilers.

But overall it looks like just the sort of grand-scale galactic battle that I’ve been waiting for. I could never get enough of it with the likes of the other Star Wars films, nor Stargate, BSG, or any other sci-fi series or movies I’ve watched. I will probably be waiting for the crowds to pass through before seeing it myself, but if it lives up to my expectations, I could well see it again.

Whilst I am not a huge Star Wars fan I have to say that trailor also excited me. The whole Anakin - Darth Vadar aspect of it really interests me. Although I dont know if I will watch it in the cinema as I havent seen anything in the cinema since the Return of the King over a year ago!

And as for spoilers…I hate them. I never get curious because I know they will spoil the film.

Yeah from what I saw in the trailers it seems it goes back to the feeling and style of the original trilogy (has to obviously), but without the horribly special effects of those days. I really liked what I saw, and even tho I enjoyed the previous movies (I’m not a big star wars fan, but I am a sucker for special effects and jedi’s) this one looks to be quite a bit better.

The only thing that still bugs me is the darth vader costume. As you see in one of the old movies, Luke loses his hand and gets a robot one, which looks exactly like a normal hand. Now why, in a time with such crazy technology, did darth vader get such an unwieldy, ridiculous mechanical suit.

Anyway, this movie seems to be a lot darker than the previous two, and I also am a little bit excited about it :o

So he could look like a badass obviously.

Yeah…a boring normal suit would not give such an aura of power and general evilness as the big black awkward breathing one!

He doesnt look badass at all. It looks clumsy and dumb, like something from a powerrangers movie. Guess its preference, but really, sidious looks infinitely more evil, without looking retarded. same goes for darth maul.

If Star Wars episodes IV-VI were created today we could probably count on darth vader being much more agile and impressive. Its just the limits of the time. The lightsaber fights in IV-VI are really pretty basic compared to the fancy choreography in I-II.

The Darth helmet is such a classic. Perhaps it is because I saw the movies when I was much younger but darth vader still looks rather menacing to me.

I didnt see the movies until pretty late, and I have never been able to get rid of the ‘5 dollar costume’ feel I got from darthvader. It just looks so fake :(

While the suit does seem a little funny now, I would like to draw your attention to this Episode 3 poster. It shows the helmet being used in conjunction with a hood (as all Sith wear), and although it does look quite top heavy, it also looks a lot cooler. Perhaps that’s how it was meant to be.
