Nice and Simple
OK, because I did all the hard work on my own offline version of the site over the past while, Aelon’s actual upgrade today took all of 5 minutes. I’ll spare you the technical details of what has changed, and will instead tell you about the things that you will notice as different.
Firstly, Gravatars have been enabled on the site. For those who give a damn, you can go to the gravatar website and upload your own gravatar, and it will show on any blog entry that uses the same e-mail which you signed up to gravatar.com with. As such, it can follow you to any blog or any forum on the entire internet, which has the system enabled. I’ve not actually seen any forums that use it yet, but a lot of blogs do. Like this one.
Secondly, WordPress now remembers who you’re logged in as in a more graceful fashion. Rather than just having the name/email/site inputs already filled, it just tells you that you’re logged in as… yourself. It saves space, and makes the system seem smarter than it was before, even though it really isn’t. Still, it’s nice.
Lastly, and most importantly, the upgrade means we can properly facilitate those who would like to casually blog with us. So, if you’d like to post entries up on the blog once in a while, the details on how to go about it are in this forum thread. It would be very cool to see a bunch of you up there. The requirements for doing so are pretty basic.

Right…Gravatars. So when I make this comment, my little picture should come up?
As for blog entries, I may consider doing one if I can think of a decent topic of discussion, which isnt likely at the moment as my good ideas seem to have dried up…

Nice additions (This is a test).

Where’s your gravatar, Cyrris?

Pending for myself as well. Sorry it took so long I was having a hard time choosing between the christmas headcrab or gun.

I’ll know the world is coming to a close when you run out of things to add to this site.
Big ups on latest additions, as always.

Wow. I like these here changes.
Time to go upload myself a gravatar.

Wow that was a pretty quick approval. Headcrabs rated G.
A definite “gg” to Cyrris for his constantly dedication to making the site “even cooler”.

Right here, to the left? I can see it. It doesn’t display for the actual blog post, only comments. I suppose I can have it displaying for the post itself, as I’ve seen other blogs do it, but to be honest I don’t really want it to. I think it’d clutter up the look of the front page (as it’d have to display on the front page too, not just this one). Even now, it makes the comments page look cluttered when most of the posts are really short… of course that won’t be the norm, will it =P
That said, I can’t see Holliday’s yet… sure you’ve entered the right e-mail? (It’s case sensitive).

Actually, I think having the [gr]avatar next to the posts on the front page would look swish… assuming the person posting alternates often enough. When you get into those dry runs of just one person posting thing after thing, that might look a bit… off.
And what’s with this gravatar site, anyway? How long does it take to approve of a bottle of vegemite? I mean, really.

Well, gravatar.com is, I think, a one-man show. Plus there’s the timezone issues. It took me a while to have mine approved, but Holliday says it was instant for him, so it makes sense with him being on that side of the world and all.
And I do believe it’s a “jar” of vegemite, just to be a smartarse. =P

Damn it, a jar! I wrote “can” first and then did that :S kind of expression and thought “you retard, with this and saying golf bat the other night, you should HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME” and I just completely blanked on what was the right word, so I threw down bottle.
And the thing about it all is that you’re somehow to blame! DAMN IT!

I disagree, I think it would make the main blog posts look too informal, I like it as it is now.
And Cyrris, I took your suggestion and went with the orange!

Ah, only comments…
I too vote we try it in the actual blog posts.

It looks like Gravatars are rippling across the blogosphere again. I’m glad of it, personally - it means more people are signing up for them, and my site isn’t completely overrun with my “no gravatar here” gravatar.

It’s definately something I hope takes off (that is, more than they are now). Though if it got really, really, really big, gravatar.com would need some pretty impressive servers, even if it is just for serving images.

Mine wasn’t exactly instantly approved. It took about 20 minutes. Maybe I was just lucky.
18th March | Reply
well I submitted mine yesterday, and it still isnt approved. If they ever want to be big they have to find something better than some guy looking over each avatar -_-
18th March | Reply
JD, you should have just slept with him, as Holliday SO OBVIOUSLY DID!
20 minutes indeed.

well I gots my avatar now, but it screwed up the trasparency. Waiting on approval of my new av -_-

I might just make a mention that the guy who runs Gravatars says that the transparency bug is fixed, though anyone previously affected (ie: Taco) will have to reupload their image.
