Having an old PC can be good sometimes

By Lord.Nagash

Hey, my first post here in a while. But I digress.

I’ve been playing Battle Realms lately, mostly because I can’t actually run anything new on this computer. If I remember correctly, a lot of people denounced Battle Realms. I know several that did myself. But I’m always game enough to pick something up that everyone else says was horrible, so I did.

I really don’t see what everyone complained about with this game. It has a lot of things that the RTS genre usually lacks.

I particularly like the branching storyline. One thing about RTS games is that they can be a little less involving than others, because you have almost no choice about what you are actually doing. In Battle Realms, you get the initial choice which decides your character for the rest of the game, plus you get to make tactical decisions as the game progresses.

The unit system is also very interesting, and actually makes sense. If you want to train someone in hand to hand, send them to the proper training facility. Then if you want them to multitask, send them to a different academy. It makes more sense than several different types of units popping out of thin air from the same building.

Now, the story. I haven’t actually finished the game yet, but I feel I am drawing close. The story itself has been keeping me interested in the game, but one drawback about the game is that the gameplay can become a little repetitive. It’s definately not a game I could play through in one sitting.

Finally, the graphics. While they were probably okay for their time, they are a little dated now. But I personally think the graphics take a back seat to the other features of a game.

All in all, i’d give this game a 3.5 out of 5. Definately worth a look if you ignored it when it first came out, especially considering how cheap it is (I scored my copy for $9.95)

I remember playing the demo for this. I liked the way units were trained as well. But once you got to the combat part it seemed rather fruitless. Just select a bunch of guys and click where the bad guys are and combat happened. The units you built up really didn’t seem to matter much once the battles got going. Also since you could train a single unit to be powerful in both melee and ranged you could just make a big army of them. Diversification of your ranks didn’t seem to be that important.

I liked the demo and the setting/unit design. I doubt i’ll check up on it again though.
