It’s a Small World After All

By Cyrris

I was spurred into doing a Google search the other day. An old friend of mine who goes by the handle of Alt-Key made a comment on my personal site. I’d not heard from him in a while, seeing as his old website - TheAltKey.com - has been down for a while, and I’ve not really been able to keep in touch.

The Google search brought up a particularly interesting result.

Firstly, I think it’s a good lot of fun meeting people online when you have a reason to. For instance, being introduced to someone by a friend in the hopes of helping to solve a problem. Let’s just do a run-down of some people who know people and so forth.

  • To kick it off, there is Alt-Key. He knows me because we were both forumgoers on the GameSpy Forums. That’s going back about 3 years.
  • I know a good bloke who is also on ForumPlanet, who goes by the name of Edge Damodred. He is a 3DAPer, one loyal to the legacy of GameSpy’s now-defunct 3DActionPlanet.com. I got to know him a bit better as I helped design the [3DAP] Guild’s website.
  • During the development of the last version of Aelon (see the sites history) , I ran into a code problem I had no idea how to fix. Damodred introduced me to DesPlesda, who he knows through The SnarkPit. Des helped to fix my problem quicksmart.
  • It was some time later, I was talking to Des about Antares, a project I’m doing with some friends. We still required an elite coder, so Des hooked me up with DeathWish, who is exactly that.

And so it came to pass that I did a Google search for Alt-Key, and the positive result I got? Well, it’s this page here. I’ll add for those who can’t be arsed clicking the link - it’s a site which links up DeathWish all the way back around to our first man, Alt-Key, from a number of years ago. Aside from myself, I’m quite sure each component of the social loop is only familiar with the friend on each side.

So it’s Alt-Key to Me to Damodred to DesPlesda to DeathWish… and back to Alt-Key. I thought it was quite a find indeed. Small cyberworld.

It’s such a small world. It’s really scary when this sort of thing happens.

By the way, here’s a map of his that I reviewed at Pixel. Strengthens the DeathWish/AltKey connection in this circle of people-knowing.

What is it they say, that everyone in the world can be linked by 6 degrees of seperation?

    It’s goddamn crazy.

3dactionplanet.com is defunct? I guess I haven’t been to GameSpy in a really long time…

Yeah, it was just a 3DAction-related news site (like, using GameSpy Daily feeds) for quite some time. Then a month or so ago the page was blanked with a “new revamped 3DAP coming soon” message… now I guess what’s there is the revamp, but it’s pretty poor. It’s just a category hub. No content.

Gamespy has gotten pretty pathetic since the takeover and shaithis’ leaving. It saddens me greatly.
