Action Heroes

By Hardflip

It’s sad to see the demise of the real action heroes we loved throughout the 80s, and perhaps early 90s. This includes Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis and even Van Damme. When was the last time you saw a good movie with a burly man going around blowing stuff up? Arnie did make a brilliant return for T3, but I fear that will be the last of it. Hell, the last Die Hard was 10 years ago (although another is in production).

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the new action heroes who are casual looking people, but end up kicking ass; such as Neo from the Matrix or Preston from Equilibrium. It’s just that what I was brought up on is coming to an end with the need for ‘intelligent’ plots. From what i’ve seen of “The Rock” in “The Rundown” he seems as if he could do the job, but he doesn’t have what all the others did. He’s too clean.

Arnie had the Austrian voice, Stallone had the speech impediment and Willis had less muscle but more wit - all of which added to their character. The only character I can really see in “The Rock” is him wearing spandex and beating up other men in a ring.

Let’s just hope Bruce Willis does well with Die Hard 4.0, since I can’t see Stallone or Arnie returning any more.

I fairly enjoyed “The Scorpion King” as a fun hollywood action film. I haven’t seen anything else with him in it as a major role but I do intend to rent “The Rundown” and “Walking Tall” sometime in the near future to see if Doug can truly carry the torch of badass.

I just cant see the action movie genre getting any more healthy. With concerned groups blaming violent movies (and games) for everything, I feel they may be a dying breed

It’s sad that someone like Tobey Maguire in the spiderman flicks can make a metrosexual like Ben Affleck look action starworthy.

Vin Diesel makes me hot. At least as Riddick. I need those eyes.

Vin Diesel can do a decent action hero as long as he doesn’t get a shitty script thrown at him like Triple X or Fast and the Furious.

A Man Apart was a more realistic action movie but he wasn’t bad in that, and Riddick was pretty damn cool.

Not sure if anything will come of it but there was suggestion of Ewan McGreggor playing the next Bond since Brosnan is evidently hanging out for a stack-load of cash for the next one. I thought it was a bit daft but who knows. With Brosnan practically pushing up the daisies these days, I think it’s time for some how doesn’t look like he’s in danger of putting his back out rather than kicking ass.

One thing that can be said about the current crop of heroes is that with the exception of The Rock, they’re getting skinnier. Not sure who qualifies as a hero these days (and thus proves the point of the update in the first place), but stars like Wil Smith and Matt Damon aren’t exactly in the same mould as Arnie or Stallone. I think I give thanks for this…

My understanding was that Brosnan has already decided he’s finished with Bond. That’s why speculation of who’ll be the next one has been all over the tabloids.
